Today we didn’t have a whole lot of time to go and do an elaborate hike that was far away from us. Because of that and because I was dying to get my kids outside and in nature, we went to one of our “go-to” hiking spots that we LOVE!!! This hike is less than 20 minutes away from our home and is shaded, short and interesting!
I find that in circumstances like this, it is important to have a couple “Go-To” hikes that we can do at a moments notice, very little packing and planning and not too far away.
Here are a couple of our “go-to” hikes:
- Ankeny Wildlife Refuge – Ankeny has a couple of great trails that are perfect for all ages including the Rail Trail and this fabulous trail around a large pond. Each trail has an abundance of birds, frogs and fish for the little ones to look at.
- Joryville – This sweet place is great at the end of summer. Bring buckets to collect tons of blackberries.
- Silver Falls – A little further away so if we don’t have too much time, we pick a shorter trail! But I have to say that this is one of my absolute favorite places to hike!! It has many trails so you can go for a short little hike when you are pressed for time.
