A great short hike, that can be made as long as you want to go for!!
Location: This hike is located just west of Portland in Forest Park. Parts of this long hike can be accessed through many popular locations on the West side of Portland including the Pittock Mansion, and the Oregon Zoo parking lot area. However, we accessed the trail part way along, right off Cornell Rd, near the Audobon Society of Portland.
From Salem, OR. Travel north on the I-5 until you reach exit #292-A for the 217 Hwy on the right. Take this exit and continue north. You’ll travel almost the whole length of this hwy (7.5 miles). As the hwy splits take the exit towards Barnes Rd and turn right onto Barnes Road and continue for 1.4 miles. Turn left onto Miller Road. After 1.1 miles turn right onto Cornell Road. Stay on Cornell Road for 2 miles. The Audobon Society of Portland will be on the right. The parking lot for the trail will be about 100 yards past the Audobon Society and will be on the left.
Difficulty: 2/5, this path was mostly groomed well, with a few large rocks making it a little bumpy. It also has quite a few hills to be aware of.
Kid Friendly: For the .8 miles we traveled down to the Stone Castle and .8 miles back, the kids had a great time and enjoyed the little stream we walked next to. And, being that we traveled this trail very close to Halloween, the kids were certain it was a witches house and enjoyed making stories along the way.
Stroller Accessible: This path is pretty well groomed and would be suitable for a sturdy jogging stroller. Be aware though, that there are large rocks that could be tricky to navigate and a few places a long the way there is a large step to go down and the trail narrows quite a bit.
Description: This complete Wildwood Trail System is 29.66 miles long, According to National Geographic. Where we started was located a few miles into the trail system already. When arriving at the parking lot, you can take the Wildwood Trail to the right and it will take you to the famous Pittock Mansion or you can take the trail left to go where we went, to the Stone Castle at Forest Park.
From the parking lot to the Stone Castle (Also known as Witches Castle) the trail is .8 miles and is mostly downhill. There is a pretty little stream that runs parallel to the trail, you cross the stream at one point. There are parts along the trail that you can walk down and play in the stream.
The Stone Castle is an interesting and amazing little Castle that is covered with graffiti and moss. The kids had a great time running around it, through it and making up games and stories to play.
You can continue on this trail for as long as you’d like, depending on your time limits. But if this is as far as you go, it is still a wonderful, beautiful little hike for little and big legs alike.
