Flat trail and lots of little critters!!
Location: Take Liberty St in Salem, OR. Follow that road all the way south a few miles. Ankeny is located on your left.
Difficulty: 1/5
Kid Friendly: Very kid friendly. So many little critters, birds and more for the kids to see. Lots to explore and a sweet path.
Stroller Accessible: This trail would be great for a stroller, a jogging stroller with wheels that can absorb some of the shock of the rocks on the path.
Description: From the parking lot, take the path to the right (I guess there is no other path to take :)) Follow that path around the first lake, when you come to a fork, we went left and thought that this path went around the lake. Don’t make this mistake. It will take you to an overlook where the kids threw rocks into the river. Turn back at this point. It looks like there is a path off to the left, but it dead ends and it is not a fun walk for little legs. Turn back and take the other fork.
This area is a bird sanctuary so we saw many birds. We also saw Nutria, butterflies, dragonflies and my kids favorite was the frogs. We heard a lot of bullfrogs (we also saw a dead one – blech) but the little tiny frogs were camouflaged. We found many of them in a little swamp area at the end of the first lake.
I don’t know what I was thinking but don’t wear flip-flops. However, this is a totally flat hike. No dogs or bikes are allowed.
